230th Anniversary Ceremony to Commemorate the Buttonwood Agreement

  • Outside the New York Stock Exchange 11 Wall Street New York, NY, 10005 United States (map)

On May 17,1792, twenty-four stock brokers trading largely in government securities got together under a buttonwood (“sycamore”) tree on Wall Street to sign an agreement forming what today is the New York Stock Exchange. This so-called “Buttonwood Agreement”, which provides that trades in listed securities be brought to a central market with uniform prices, created the basis for the New York Stock Exchange today.
