Samuel Morse performs an early public demonstration of his new telegraph machine using cable strung for two miles between Castle Garden and Castle Williams on Governors Island.
Professor Samuel F. B. Morse, who was conducting tests of his magnetic telegraph system, employing copper cabling similarly insulated with tarred thread. He lent at least three reels of insulated cable to Samuel Colt who, in the immediate vicinity, was giving his second major New York Demonstration.
